Who has the best Pizza App in Aust?

Today I attempt to answer the question of who has the best Pizza App in Aust?. My review covers Crust Pizza, Dominos Pizza, Eagle Boys Pizza and Pizza Hut.

I have used 5 main criteria to evaluate each app.

  • Ease of ordering/payment/getting help/customer service
  • Ease of navigation/functionality
  • Added value – Rewards/Loyalty club
  • User experience – Is it intuitive based on how pizza users shop
  • Design/Aesthetic appeal & branding

Overall Winner

Overall, each app does a very good job in regard to functionality. Specifically, ease of navigation, ordering (clearly showing the accumulated $ value of the order in progress) and payment. Method, store, time and order are all reconfirmed at the checkout stage. Basic kilojoule information is also provided.

However, there are small but significant differences between each app that set them apart. These are also partly a reflection of the type of pizza customer that each brand is targeting. Your own rating may change depending on which these features are most important to you.

My overall winner is Dominos Pizza, followed closely behind by Eagle Boys, then Pizza Hut and Crust Pizza in that order.

For Dominos it is hard to go past the Live Pizza Tracker. It is a unique innovation which tracks the status of your order in real time and is a fantastic customer engagement tool. Dominos also are the only app that provides detailed allergy and additive information, even though it is not prominently featured or displayed.

For Eagle Boys, if I want to order a pizza say in the afternoon, I love being able scan down the list of stores closest to me and see which store is open or closed. If closed, when they are open and estimated times for pickup and delivery by store. It’s very easy for me to order for now or later. With other brands, I need to check individually for each store.

I also really like being able to scan down the list of pizzas to see which have vegetarian and gluten free options using coloured icons on the page, rather then having to discover it one by one after selecting the Pizza. Thirdly, Eagle Boys are also seemingly the only app which provides a contact phone number if you need help.

Listed below in more detail, are the strengths and weaknesses of each app.

Crust Pizza

Who has the best Pizza App in Aust?

Strengths

Very extensive menu options for customisation, which is likely a reflection of the Crust Pizza user. Can customise by dough, base, meat, vegetable, seafood, garnishes, cheese and size. Half half/build your own customise options are on the second screen. You don’t have to scroll down a long list to find this out.

Very easy to save your favourites.

Sign up for vipp – get free delivery for orders over $20.

Can browse the menu without entering personal details.

Weaknesses

If trying to order a pizza for pick up in the afternoon, it gives you the message that the store is closed. You have to scroll through each store individually until you find one that is open. Does show you available times when order can be delivered.

Have to go into that pizza choice first to see if vegetarian or gluten free options are available.

If you leave the app and come back in again the message is not as welcoming as other apps. It just gives you one option, do you want to start the order from scratch and start over?

No allergen or additive information provided.

No bundling or meal deal options.

Available for download on Apple iTunes for iPhone and Google Play for Android.

Dominos Pizza

Strengths

Free delivery for orders over the value of $25.

Bundle deal options available.

Very easy to choose additions such as crust type, sauce, individual toppings for each pizza.

Easy to upgrade to cheesy crust or add drinks, dessert at the end of the order if forgotten.

Info – helpful additional information on surcharge info, privacy policy, help as well as allergen and additive information.

eclub – can sign up to get deals via ams or email.

If you leave the app and come back in, you get a welcome back message with key details “highlighted” in case you have forgotten to continue order same/new time or start a new order.

Weaknesses

Drinks are included in sides: rather than separate menu. Need to scroll through bread, chips, bundle deals, chicken & sauces list.

Need to scroll down on the main pizza menu to get to make your own – designa or half n half. This can be a reflection of the Dominos Pizza customer who are maybe less interested in customisation.

Have to go into that pizza choice to see if vegetarian or gluten free options available.

Only seem to offer one size pizza.

Can’t browse the menu without entering personal details first.

Available for download on Apple iTunes for iPhone/iPad and Google Play for Android.

Update Jul 2014 Dominos Pizza Mogul

Dominos Pizza have just introduced another great innovation called Pizza Mogul, available on their website, as well as via an app.

Consumers are invited to create their own pizza, name it, share their creation on social channels and have it available for sale immediately on the Dominos website (as seen below). Every sale will earn them between 25c and $4.50 per pizza, depending on the number of toppings. The App is very intuitive and easy to use. Brilliant.

Update Feb 2015 Dominos Half Yearly Profit Results

Australian Food News reports that Pizza restaurant group Domino’s Pizza Enterprises Limited (Domino’s) has reported its strongest profit for a half-year period*, with a Net Profit after Tax for the first half of the 2015 financial year of $29.1 million, up 44.2 per cent on the prior corresponding period.

Domino’s has attributed the strong profit growth to “digital and product innovation, record store count growth, overseas earnings from Japan, economies of scale and crowdsourcing initiatives”.

Here are some further highlights from that article.

Product offering and digital developments

Domino’s launched a number of key digital initiatives to allow customers to interact with the brand. Among these crowdsourcing initiatives was Pizza Mogul – a platform launched in Australia in July 2014 leading what the Company has called the “me-tailing” revolution.
With more than 55,000 “Moguls” registered to date and an impressive 160,000 pizzas added to the menu, the Mogul website and App pays customers to promote their pizza creations thereby driving sales and rewarding customer engagement and innovation. The more they sell, the more they earn.

“While a number of significant digital projects are being developed behind the scenes, this half-year period was heavily focused on our People Powered Pizza ethos and branding mantra,” Mr Meij said. “Our progressive Pizza Mogul platform has been a major sales driver for us but it’s also a great example of what can be achieved when a company allows customers to champion their brand,” he said.

“We are seeing huge amounts of user-generated content being produced by our passionate pizza lovers and this goes beyond our expectations,” Mr Meij said.

Further digital developments

Domino’s recently launched an extension of the Domino’s Pizza Tracker in Australia to now include Android Watch. The Pizza Tracker allows customers to “Chromecast” their Pizza Tracker to their TV.

Update Mar 2015 Dominos adds ‘quick ordering’ feature to website and app

Australian Food News reports, With online sales expected to make up 80 per cent of pizza restaurant group Domino’s business in the next two to three years, the Company has launched a Quick Ordering feature allowing customers to save their preferred pizza orders and payment method and reducing the number of clicks to only four. Update May 2015 Dominos GPS Driver Tracker

Dominos just keep raising the digital bar. From Jul, 2015 Dominos will be introducing a GPS Driver Tracker in Aust & NZ to enable you the progress of your pizza delivery after it has left the store in real time.
